We have played an integral part in nuclear site licensing initiatives in South Africa since 2006.  A critical aspect of supporting nuclear site licensing applications by Eskom (the dominant South African power service provider) to the South African National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is developing Site Safety Reports (SSRs).

Eskom holds a ‘bank’ of potential nuclear sites along the South African coastline, and we have developed SSRs for three of the sites earmarked for future development. This involvement has encompassed developing technical specifications for producing SSRs, carrying out the technical work needed to produce the SSRs, and responding to NNR feedback on the SSRs produced.

Technical aspects to be addressed when assessing safety of a proposed nuclear installation include ecological setting, demography, surrounding land and water uses, adjacent sea uses, nearby transportation/industrial/military facilities, meteorology, oceanography/coastal engineering, hydrology/hydraulics, geohydrology, water supply, and geotechnical issues.

Our technical experts produce the SSR chapters on ecology, surface and groundwater characterisation, and geotechnical characterisation. We also provide the overall project management so vital to a project of this scale and outsource the remaining SSR technical components. The guidance and regulatory framework under which we provide our services is considered state-of-the-art in the global nuclear fraternity.

Services

  • SSR project management to support licensing applications
  • Technical studies to support geotechnical, surface water, and hydrogeological site characterisation
  • Specialist field data gathering to support probabilistic seismic hazard assessment
