SRK does not charge a fee for participation in the workshop but notes that the number of seats is limited.
This workshop will take place on 26 October 2022 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The purpose of the workshop is to provide participants with the guidance on best practice of integrating mine closure into project life cycles and an understanding of the importance of developing feasible closure designs and realistic closure cost estimates to achieve closure goals. During this workshop, many aspects of mine closure will be discussed in an interactive way with a full involvement of all participants.
In Kazakhstan, mine closure is a relatively recent development that is attracting increasing attention of the mining companies, regulators and financiers. The mining industry strives to incorporate the best of the international developments in mine closure and is progressing rapidly. However, there is still room for improvement especially with feasibility of closure designs and closure costing. As of now, the closure legislation in Kazakhstan does not provide detailed guidance and regulations on socioeconomic transition aspects of closure. This issue is becoming of particular relevance to coal mining operations that are planned to be phased out in the coming decades as part of Kazakhstan's energy transition. In this context, the problem of so-called “mono towns” where the majority of the population and their livelihoods depend on one or two mining operations presents a worrisome situation.
As a result, workshop participants will:
· strengthen the knowledge of mine closure legislation in Kazakhstan;
· learn the leading practice in integrated mine closure firsthand;
· understand the importance of proper closure planning including feasibility of closure designs;
· find ways to proactively identify the residual closure-related risks and develop mitigation measures;
· understand the socioeconomic aspects of mine closure;
· find practical solutions and technical advice on closure aspects;
· understand closure cost types, calculations and accounting over the entire life-of-asset;
· hear examples through case studies from Kazakhstan and abroad.
This workshop will bring together world class experts in closure, consultants of several SRK practices worldwide, as well as decision makers, representatives from the national and international mining and exploration companies, representatives of academia, and all interested parties.
