Mining valuation: What is value? Valuing intangibles and international perspectives

Description

Environmental, Social and Governance has risen to prominence as a key consideration in all phases of mining – from exploration through studies, operation and closure. It is now understood that mining companies need to be environmentally responsible and actively manage a social licence to operate. Governance plays an important role in ensuring that good ethical practices underpinning responsible and effective environmental and social practices are embedded in the company culture and are value adding.

However, a broad appreciation that ESG factors are key risks and an intuitive appreciation that value is created does not translate readily into the quantification of value. As valuators, we are looking into how we can quantify this value and what metrics might guide us. This presentation outlines some of the metrics available and some of the current research into the valuation of ESG aspects in mining.
