Esteban Hormazábal, Managing Director of SRK Consulting Chile, Corporate Consultant, and Head of the Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling business unit, has been elected as the new Regional Vice President for Latin America by the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM).
The ceremony took place during the ISRM’s council meeting on October 10, 2023, coinciding with the 15th ISRM International Congress held in Salzburg, Austria.
“It is certainly an honour to be invited to this position, I strongly believe that the ISRM needs to address, in the short-term, the motivation of young students in rock/soil mechanics training, and in the long term, promote interaction with the mining industry to secure funding for the development of innovation and new technologies/methodologies in the Latin American region,” he said.
Esteban noted the vital role that the ISRM plays in fostering the participation of countries without a strong rock mechanics tradition. “I believe that by promoting rock mechanics training and education, we can create a community of young professionals who are passionate about the industry and who will contribute to its growth and development. Providing opportunities for young professionals to learn from experienced mentors and industry leaders will contribute to an environment focused on innovation, collaboration, and excellence”.
