To help build a pathway to carbon-neutral mining, the Mining Journal has launched the Digging for Climate Change multimedia online platform. Through engagement with industry leaders such as SRK Consulting, Anglo American, Rio Tinto, and ICMM, the Mining Journal aims to stimulate conversation around climate change, particularly as it relates to mining. Goals of the initiative include helping mining companies understand their obligations for responding to climate challenges, promoting key minerals needed in terms of transitioning to clean energy technologies, and helping stakeholders develop plans for achieving targets by 2030 and beyond.

The Digging for Climate Change website shares thought leadership articles, roundtable discussions, an in-depth research report, and multiple reviews. A podcast library contains interviews with industry leaders and climate experts such as SRK’s Senior ESG Consultant Chris O’Brien. In an episode on slashing fleet emissions, Chris discusses climate change mitigation and adaptation, the importance of accurately tracking emissions, and prospects for including emissions in development feasibility studies.

“Big wins for reducing greenhouse gas emissions include captive power generation and haulage,” said Chris. “Given the difficulty of dealing with haulage diesel emissions, swapping trucks for electric conveyors/ rail or instead using hydrogen power would help mining operations decarbonize. We’ve really run out of time for climate action, so now we’re in a race to the bottom.”

By exploring material shared via the Digging for Climate Change platform and collaborating with other stakeholders, mining companies can be instrumental in developing progressive policies and innovative technologies that will move the industry towards net-zero emission targets and a greener future.
