The board of global mining group, SRK Consulting has appointed Mr Carl Murray as Managing Director for the Australasia practice.
Mr Murray is a Perth-based mining engineer with over 35 years of experience working in various operational positions prior to joining SRK almost 18 years ago. He steps into the leadership role, succeeding the previous Managing Director, Mark Noppé, who will now be dedicating his time to perform as Corporate Consultant (Geology) and Global Chair for the SRK Group.
Mr Murray believes the current market trends are opportune for multidisciplinary consultancies such as SRK. The ability to provide robust services within the full mine lifecycle means in turn there is a material advantage to mining companies where the risk of gaps between study teams is greatly reduced.
When the geologists provide the mineral resource model to the mining team you have the experts at your disposal to clarify fields and model limitations when adding attritional parameters such as geotechnical and metallurgical fields," Mr Murray explained.
A massive benefit of being an interdisciplinary and independently-owned global company is that we can react quickly, work more efficiently and leverage our international expertise to provide timely solutions to our clients."
Mr Murray says environmental, social and governance awareness is becoming increasingly prominent in the mining industry. The group has observed that a growing number of companies from small start-ups to influential majors are taking a proactive approach to social responsibility and sustainable practices.
We can see progression in the general understanding that there are better and more cost-effective ways to mine, where social responsibility is more relevant to a clients’ ‘bottom line’ and the consideration of future generations is shifting to the forefront," Mr Murray said.
A growth area lies in the closure of operations that aligns with social and environmental momentum. There is a great opportunity to be involved in ageing assets and responsibly prepare them for closure in the coming years."
Mr Murray's focal point is to develop the next generation of SRK leaders, encourage them to take calculated risks, and ensure they have the skill sets to maintain SRK's Tier 1 reputation.
I see internal and external business development as fundamental to bringing this goal to fruition," he said. "This includes not only building on the technical expertise of our team but also maturing their capabilities to manage both business objectives and client relationships."
Mr Murray has extended his gratitude to Mr Noppé for his leadership shown during his time as Managing Director and for his continued commitment to SRK, saying,
Mark provides a huge benefit to SRK globally, and it is a great advantage to myself and the SRK Australasia group to have him so heavily involved in our international opportunities."
Mr Murray officially started his role on 1 April 2022.
