SRK Consulting is pleased to mark the 20th anniversary of its China practice, reflecting on two decades of growth and contribution to the mining and natural resources sectors. Since its establishment in February 2005, the SRK China office in Beijing has evolved from a small team supported by SRK’s international network into a practice comprised of three offices that deliver technical expertise to projects both in China and around the globe.
The establishment of SRK China came at a time when the mining sector in China was expanding rapidly, and SRK anticipated its growing importance in the international mining landscape. Early milestones included projects like the initial public offerings of Lingbao Gold in Henan and China Coal Group on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, which helped build the firm's reputation in the region.
Between 2005 and 2012, SRK China experienced significant growth, expanding its services and taking on projects across Mongolia, Indonesia, Africa, and the Americas. In 2009, the Nanchang office was opened, and by 2012, the practice had grown to a team of 74 professionals offering expertise across multiple technical disciplines.
SRK China has faced and navigated periods of market instability, including the financial turbulence of 2008, the challenges of the mining downturn in 2013, and most recently, the global disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, SRK China leveraged its collaboration with SRK offices worldwide to continue delivering services, even as restrictions made international travel and project site access more difficult. From 2020 to 2022, SRK China focused on maintaining client relationships and adapting to new operational realities.
In 2023, SRK China expanded further by opening its third office in Kunming, Yunnan Province. The Kunming office serves as a strategic base for operations in Southwest China and Southeast Asia, contributing to a range of projects and strengthening regional capabilities. SRK China has also deepened its commitment to social responsibility. Since 2023, the practice has supported children with limited parental presence in remote areas of Yunnan by donating essentials and creating initiatives aimed at fostering hope and community.
