A total of 12 university geoscience departments throughout the country and Geoscience Australia are set to be given free access to the critically acclaimed course ‘Practical Geocommunication’ from early 2023. The course is being sponsored by SRK Australia and was created by Geologize, a global and widely endorsed training service for scholars and industry professionals.

CEO and Director at Geologize, Dr Haydon Mort is an expert in Earth Science communication and created the course to provide a comprehensive on-demand training tool that aims to teach geoscientists how to communicate with the public more effectively.

SRK's sponsorship will help accelerate regional and global awareness of the geosciences as a subject by providing key communication training to staff and students across Australia" Dr Mort said.

To progress global awareness, Geologize and SRK plan to further extend the free licence to universities in another international region.

SRK Australia Managing Director, Carl Murray believes that this partnership will help drive the communication effort needed to build public understanding regarding what geology is and why it is essential to our everyday lives.

The industry is seeing a decline in the number of professionals entering the earth science sector as enrolments of students in geoscience courses continue to fall – this is where building relevant communication and engagement skills can play a vital role in creating interest and shifting the public’s perception of the importance of geosciences in the modern world."

Geologize's vision is to create a critical mass of geoscientists that can powerfully engage the public in a way that reverses the declining interest in the Earth Sciences and Mr Murray looks forward to having SRK Australia play a part in achieving this.

SRK’s social responsibility includes considering how we can support the people and communities in which we operate; my hope for this sponsorship is to positively contribute to this social space and open more conversations in the geosciences and the role it plays in the mining industry."

The sponsorship will cover the entire course fee for 12 Australian universities and Geoscience Australia. The universities set to gain access from early 2023 are Australian National University, Flinders University, Griffith University, James Cook University, Macquarie University, University of Newcastle, RMIT University, University of Sydney, University of Tasmania, UNSW, UWA, University of Wollongong.
