SRK was engaged by Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) to conduct a program of structural interpretation and mapping from UAV data in open pit operations across the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
In conjunction with the RTIO structural geology team, SRK devised an innovative workflow using Maptek suite software to integrate existing pit and crest mapping, drill hole data, geological models and newly acquired UAV photogrammetry to validate and improve structural models throughout the client’s open pit operations.
High resolution UAV photogrammetry allowed the extraction of high confidence structural measurements of planes and structural readings to inform the geological models. These data can be incorporated into existing modelling workflows by geological and geotechnical stakeholders.
Newly derived mapping data were tested for conformity with the existing geology model and the mine plan. Areas of geological complexity or variance from the model were flagged for follow-up pit and crest mapping programs.
The project contributed to improved structural understanding of the operations, allowing geologists to focus their field mapping time on areas of highest priority. The findings of the project may inform geological and geotechnical models and future pit design work.
