The Amandelbult Mine Complex (AMB) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Anglo-American Platinum Limited and has been operating since the 1970s. It is situated approximately 15km northeast of Northam and 30km southwest of Thabazimbi within the Thabazimbi local municipality and the Waterberg district municipality.
In the aim to transform the mine from conventional to mechanised mining by 2032, AMB intends to commence four proposed capital projects within its mining right and surface right areas. This will allow AMB to continue mining activities for the life of the mine (beyond 2060) in the absence of significant alternative employment opportunities in the area. The capital projects will be located on the following farms, Haakdoorndrift 374 KQ, Ptn 4; Elandskuil 378 KQ, Ptn 1; Middellaagte 382 KQ, Ptns 0 and 1; Amandelbult 383 KQ, Ptn 1; Elandsfontein 386 KQ, Ptns 0, 1 and 2; and Schildpadnest 385 KQ, Ptn 0.
In order to commence with the implementation of these projects, AMB intends to apply for the necessary authorisation and licences from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE). The environmental authorisation process will include a Scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
SRK Consulting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SRK) was appointed AMB as the independent environmental assessment practitioner (EAP) to manage and facilitate the environmental authorisation processes and undertake the associated public participation process in accordance with NEMA.
