Anglo American Inyosi Coal (AAIC), a member of Thungela Resources Limited (Thungela) is applying for an environmental authorisation (EA) and water use licence (WUL) for proposed irrigation project and ventilation shafts at Elders Colliery.
Before AAIC may commence with constructing the irrigation scheme, ventilation shafts and associated auxiliary infrastructure, the following environmental authorisations and licences need to be applied for:
The proposed projects will be located approximately 25 km north of Bethal and 12 km west of Kriel in the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality in the Gert Sibande District Municipality of the Mpumalanga Province. They will be situated on Portion 2 of the farm Schoonvlei 52 IS; Portion 4 and 7 of the farm Elandsfontein 75 IS; Portion 6/3 and RE3 of the farm Middelkraal 50 IS; and Portion RE of the farm Vlakkuilen 76 IS.
Status of Project:
SRK Consulting South Africa (Pty) Ltd (SRK) has been appointed as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to conduct the S&EIA process, WULA and associated public participation process.
The Scoping Phase of the project is complete and the Impact Assessment Phase is underway. Interested and affected parties are invited to register and comment on the Draft EIA Report that is available for public comment for 30 days, from 24 March to 29 April 2025.
