Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RF) Proprietary Limited (RDM) operates an explosives manufacturing facility in Somerset West. Industrial effluent generated from the manufacturing process is discharged into the Helderberg Marine Protected Area (MPA) subject to conditions of a Coastal Waters Discharge Permit (CWDP) (Reference number 2011/003/WC/Rheinmetall Denel Munition) issued in terms of the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act 24 of 2008 (NEM:ICMA). RDM is in the process of renewing their CWDP, which expired on 28 August 2022.

An application for the renewal of the CWDP in terms of the CWDP Regulations, 2019, was submitted to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment: Oceans and Coast (DFFE:O&C) on 22 August 2022. In terms of the Protection of Administrative Justice Act 3 of 2000, the DFFE:O&C instructed RDM to undertake a public participation process, inviting the public to review and comment on the CWDP renewal application.
SRK Consulting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SRK) has been appointed by RDM to undertake the required public participation process related to the CWDP renewal application.
The CWDP renewal application is available for a 30 day public comment period and can be found below. Stakeholders are invited to submit comments and/or register on the project database via the following link https://forms.office.com/r/C2vviE8FGa ; alternatively, comments can be submitted to Murad Esau of SRK at Tel: 021 659 3060 or email: MEsau@srk.co.za.
Comments and/or requests for registration must be submitted by 17 April 2024.
