Complex Analysis

Ashleigh Maritz, a senior environmental scientist at SRK Consulting South Africa, explains the importance of technical mining solutions guided by engineering and data-driven expertise.

The issues around climate change are complex, as are the risks. And although actively discussed in boardrooms, how to mainstream climate-change mitigation into the technical disciplines that make a business work is similarily complex and risky without an integration plan. Ashleigh Maritz is a senior environmental scientist at SRK Consulting South Africa, a global consultancy practice whose experienced engineers and scientists work with clients in multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated sustainable technical solutions around climate change. Initially, she says, global concerns focused on how industries such as mining and power generation affected the planet. More recently, however, that focus has broadened to include the impacts of climate change on economic activity and individual projects.

'The SRK philosophy is that climate-change considerations must be addressed by all disciplines in a project team. We use a range of quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate our client's exposure to climate-change risk, ranging from measuring the project's greenhouse gas emissions, to applying climate-change models to identify specific project risks.
