A Breath Of Fresh Air

The main function of an underground ventilation system if to provide a safe, comfortable working environment in all accessible areas of a mine. This means that:

  • Contaminants including explosive fumes (containing nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide), airborne dust, and naturally occuring gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and radon are diluted to safe levels by airflows of sufficient quality;
  • Sufficient oxygen is supplied to workers underground;
  • Air temperature, speed of movement and humidity remain between the legal maximum and minimum levels, and at a comfortable level as far as is practical.
