Benchmarking Mine Water Usage as a Method to Improve Water Efficiency

The efficient use of water is critical for mines to ensure operational and environmental sustainability. This is particularly true in water scarce regions, and in areas where climate change has stressed water resources. Tracking water usage for sustainability reporting is required of mining companies, yet translating this data into actionable improvement remains a challenge. Often, water accounting data is reported using frameworks like the ICMM water accounting guidelines. However, this data often remains unexplored and underutilized once reported. Disclosures that do exist, do not account for mine characteristics like climate and commodity, that may influence mine water usage. To address this, we developed a database and database of publicly reported water usage data organized using ICMM water usage metrics. The data is presented through a data visualization webapp that allows user to filter and analyze the data from an asset (i.e., comparing two mines) to a characteristic level (i.e., open pit mines vs. underground mines). The database incorporates mines characteristics to offer a more granular means for comparison. Initial analysis revealed variability across most metrics when considering all operations. However, when assessed by specific mine characteristics, clearer trends emerged.

The database and data visualization tool, along with understanding of site water balances and operations, is being used to identify specific opportunities to improve water efficiency on site. Opportunities are identified based on the metrics in which the specific mine ranks lower than similar mines (e.g.  mines in a similar climate or commodity). These opportunities are then quantified and prioritized using a defined impact metric and a marginal abatement curve. This methodology not only facilitates the execution of prioritized water efficiency opportunities, but also enhances the ability to monitor and report on the progress of the initiatives annually. The process can be summarized in annual sustainability reporting leading to increased transparency with stakeholders.
