Lateral Support Design and Review of the LPC2B Crusher Pocket and Beltway Slopes at Sentinel Mine

Since 2015, SRK Consulting has been involved in numerous projects for First Quantum Minerals Trident Ltd’s (FQM) Sentinel Mine in Zambia. These include geotechnical training, geotechnical reviews, pit slope stability assessments and remediations, lateral support designs for in—pit crusher pocket excavations, and hydrogeological studies.

In 2022, FQM appointed SRK to undertake the design of lateral support for a new in-pit crusher pocket (IPC2B) and associated slope elements and to derive stable slope geometries for the V-cut beltway slopes. This paper presents the results of the stability assessments and analyses completed, lateral support design recommendations for the IPC2B area, and the stable slope geometries proposed for the V-cut beltway slopes at Sentinel Mine.

Project Description

Location

Sentinel Mine is located in Zambia's North West province, approximately 150 km west of the provincial capital Solwezi. Together with Enterprise Mine, it forms part of the Trident Project, with a nickel mine development project at Enterprise, and a copper mining and processing operation at Sentinel.
