ORE2 Tailings Conclusions

This series of eight blogposts is a summary of what a standard ORE2_Tailings™ quantitative risk assessment deployment report includes. The goal of the report is risk-informed decision-making support for the owner and the engineer of record (EoR). The methodology is compatible with ISO 31000 and ICMM GISTM. The ORE2_Tailings deployment uses archival documents supplied by the client for each tailings storage facility (TSF) and finally related dams and written Q/A sessions.

The report is an a priori endeavor insofar it delivers to the client estimates that require calibration and adaptation as new data and new events may become available and/or will occur. In particular, the report will require amendments and updates. Examples of new data or events are new space observation or other monitoring results, corrective action reports, new stability analyses, new flooding criteria, changes in service conditions, new incident reports and inspections.

The report delivers nine takeaways as follows:

2.     final look on archival deficiencies

3.     dam causality analysis

4.     benchmarking with respect to the worldwide tailings dam portfolio

5.     decreasing risks ranking

6.     risks ranking in terms of risk tolerance

7.     risk prioritization of TSFs and dams

8.     tolerable, intolerable but manageable (i.e. tactical) and intolerable and unmanageable (i.e. strategic) risk discussion

9.     risk-informed recommendations for each site and each dam

ORE2 Tailings Conclusions

In this series, we have described how an ORE2_Tailings deployment takes place. Additionally, we have shown how ORE2_Tailings supports the owner and engineer of record’s decision-making. The results can also be used to foster healthy discussions with regulators and insurers as applicable.
