In this third in a series of three articles, SRK Consulting emphasizes that energy efficiency strategies are vital considerations for new mining projects or brownfield expansions. As such, they need to be carefully balanced with technological certainty and sustainability goals.
According to SRK’s principal mechanical engineer Chris Smythe, energy efficiency can have a significant effect on the financial viability of borderline projects, while high energy efficiency improves the financial projections for all studies.
“Improving energy efficiency must always be considered early in the planning stages when it is easier to do,” says Smythe. “Good planning upfront is much more cost-effective – and less time-consuming – than making modifications to an existing plan, or even after construction.”
Kenny Mahuma, principal electrical engineer, also highlights the importance of an early-stage focus on energy in their approach to project investigations.
