Nel explained how the South African Water Week and World Water Week key messages are aligned. Water Week is about educating the public about their responsibility with regard to water conservation initiatives, and raising awareness around protecting and conserving water resources. Furthermore, there is not enough surface and groundwater to sustain the increasing demand for water usage. The solution is not building new dams or drilling more boreholes rather it is to reduce water usage.
The industry’s new development or focal point is water user education. Nel mentions industries are not alone in this fight to combat water challenges. There are water stewardship programs targeted at bringing users from a specific catchment together to work towards protecting and conserving water resources in that catchment. This means it is everyone’s responsibility to combat the water challenges faced.
