Position Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Underground Geotechnical Consultant to join our team in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This is a permanent position that requires understanding of underground geotechnical engineering, particularly in the context of mining and tunnelling projects, with a strong focus on underground excavations, rock mechanics, and numerical modelling.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering geotechnical solutions to clients in Kazakhstan and the broader Central Asia region, where the demand for underground mining and infrastructure projects is rapidly growing. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, project management skills, and the ability to mentor junior staff.
Key Responsibilities:
1.Geotechnical Analysis and Design:
- Conduct geotechnical assessments for underground mining and tunnelling projects, including stability analysis, support design, and ground behaviour prediction.
- Develop and implement geotechnical models using advanced numerical modelling software (e.g., FLAC3D, 3DEC, PLAXIS, RS2, or similar).
- Perform rock mass characterization, including rock strength testing, structural mapping, and geotechnical core logging.
- Design and optimize ground support systems for underground excavations, including rock bolts, shotcrete, and mesh.
2.Project Management and Client Interaction:
- Lead geotechnical projects from inception to completion, ensuring deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients, providing expert advice and technical solutions tailored to their needs.
- Prepare and present technical reports, including geotechnical risk assessments, feasibility studies, and design recommendations.
3.Regional Market Focus:
- Address the specific needs of the Central Asian market, which includes a mix of deep underground mining (e.g., gold, copper, and polymetallic deposits) and infrastructure projects (e.g., tunnels for hydropower and transportation).
- Stay updated on regional regulations, industry trends, and emerging technologies to provide cutting-edge solutions to clients.
4.Mentorship and Team Development:
- Mentor and train junior geotechnical engineers and consultants, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and professional growth.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mining engineers, hydrogeologists, and environmental specialists, to deliver integrated solutions.
5.Business Development:
- Support business development efforts by identifying new opportunities, preparing proposals, and building long-term relationships with clients.
- Represent SRK Consulting at industry conferences, workshops, and technical seminars to enhance the company’s reputation in the region.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field. A master’s degree or PhD in Rock Mechanics or Geotechnical Engineering is highly desirable.
- Experience in underground geotechnical engineering, with a proven track record of working on mining and tunnelling projects.
- Extensive experience with numerical modelling software (e.g., FLAC3D, 3DEC, RS2, or similar) and proficiency in interpreting and validating model results.
- Strong understanding of rock mass classification systems (e.g., RMR, Q-system, GSI) and their application in underground design.
- Experience working in Central Asia or similar geological environments is a significant advantage.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal. Proficiency in Russian or Kazakh is highly desirable.
- Willingness to travel to project sites across Kazakhstan and the region, as required.
