Esteban is a mining engineer, with more than thirty years of experience, who holds a Master of Science (Geophysics) specialised in applied hydrogeology. Additionally, he is an expert in geomechanical analysis and the design of underground mining and surface excavations using 2D and 3D numerical modeling, stability analysis and slope design in open pit mines and tailings dumps.
He has led major open pit and underground mining projects in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, USA, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Mongolia, Peru, Russia, South Africa, Türkiye, Uruguay, and Uzbekistan.
Esteban has both authored and co-authored over 40 technical publications for national and international conferences and is currently the Vice-President for Latin America of the International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM).
This paper revisits the problem of fitting a Hoek-Brown shear failure envelope to laboratory data, proposing a methodology that accounts result from unconfined compression strength tests to characterize intact rock units and direct shear tests to characterize joints shear strengh
Learn MoreSRK Chile’s rock mechanics team completed a study of the slope design at the El Romeral pit located 463 km north of Santiago.
Learn MoreSignificant developments in numerical modelling have been achieved during the last decade, but validation of these techniques is required to build up confidence.
Learn MoreThe aim of this paper is to show how an incorrect geotechnical rock mass assessment can affect the geotechnical and geomechanical design that will produce a negative impact on both the capex, opex and high risk for a mining project and/or operation.
