SRK Sponsors IAIA Special Symposium

Session 3 | From planning to completion: Managing biodiversity risks in the mining sector
Presentation by Alice Davies

Habitat loss in the Republic of Congo (RC) as a result of subsistence agriculture, logging and charcoal making activities has led to a decline in biodiversity of tropical rainforests. Compounding these issues are the challenges of a growing population & climate change. Add mining, widely perceived as the most destructive industry, to this mix and the plight of biodiversity in the RC seems bleak.

However, during the impact assessment process SRK partnered with biodiversity consultants and NGO’s to identify feasible and effective management measures for the Kola Potash Mine.

From inherent design measures incorporated into the construction phase through to implementable management measures, which support local communities as well as protecting wildlife, this talk will show how engaging key stakeholders throughout the iterative design process can lead to novel answers to such questions as ‘how does an elephant cross a conveyor belt?’.

Session 4 | When the rubber hits the road: The practical challenges of complying with E&S standards and meeting evolving societal expectations
Fiona Cessford will be a panelist in this session
