As a part of a GIS training initiative, SRK Kazakhstan has developed an interactive map of mineral resources of Central Asia. This initiative, led by Anna Fonseca (Principal Consultant) and Anna Fardell (Senior Resource Geologist), is a constantly evolving project which includes all known deposits in the region and is based on data from public-domain sources such as S&P and USGS, national state balances, and independent CRIRSCO-compliant estimations as along with an internal SRK project database. This extensive database will allow the user to quantify the current and potential resources of the region.

The map’s filtering capability allows the user to select deposits by size (from small to very large to unique), by level of knowledge (from exploration properties to closed mines), by mine type (open pit, underground, in situ recovery, etc), by primary and secondary minerals, and many other aspects. A separate layer in the map allows the user to see all the properties that SRK has worked on, and this number is growing.

The various iterations of the map (covering, for example, Central Asian copper or uranium) have already been published on various social media platforms and have generated great following. The initiative will be further developed to include water resources of the region, environmental features, etc.
