The eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, in collaboration with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group Inc., is in the process of developing substantive policies to address air pollution and achieve targets set by the municipality to improve air quality. Airshed Planning Professionals and SRK Consulting were appointed to assist the municipality with developing the Controlled Fuels Policy.
The aim of the Project is to develop a controlled fuels policy that will address the City's particulate matter (PM) issue and will meet the South African PM standard that comes into effect in 2030. The draft Controlled Fuels Policy sets out emission standards & other compliance measures for commercial and industrial fuel burning appliances used for steam, heat and energy generation in the eThekwini Municipality. The implementation of this policy would result in improved air quality plotting a path to complying with revised National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) standards, thereby improving the health and livelihoods of the local communities.
