PROJECT SYNOPSIS

The Mondi Tank Project for PB4 entails the storage of the following chemicals and fuels adjacent to PB4 within the current Mill industrial footprint (Lot 6724 Alton, Richards Bay):

  • One (1) Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) tank with a capacity of 100 m3 (3.25 m diameter).
  • One (1) Diesel tank with a capacity of 100 m3 (3.25 m diameter).
  • One (1) 25% Solution Ammonium Hydroxide (NH4OH) tank with a capacity of 45 m3 with a top-mounted ammonia absorption tank of 2 m3 (NH3) – Total volume of 47 m3.

The Diesel and HFO tanks will be utilised for start-up purposes, and the 25% solution Ammonium hydroxide tank will be utilised during the operational phase for “De-NoX” i.e., which is an innovative clean air technology that aids in effectively reducing Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and ensures that the Richards Bay Mill meets the BAT (Best Available Techniques) emission limits, as mandated by Mondi Group.

The proposed project is subject to the following:

  • A Basic Assessment (BA) process in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) 2014 Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, as amended.
  • A variation to the following National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act, 2004 (NEM: AQA) Listed activities in Mondi’s current Atmospheric Emissions License (AEL):
    • Sub-Category 2.4 (Storage and Handling of Petroleum Products): All permanent immobile liquid storage facilities at a single site with a combined storage capacity of greater than 1000 m3.
